Résumé:

L’éléphant, le lion et le python accordent, chacun, un crédit d’un bœuf au lièvre. Le délai pour rembourser la dette est atteint. Le lièvre demande à chacun des animaux de lui donner une corde pour qu’il lui rembourse son bœuf. Il prend les cordes et les attache à un grand arbre. Il donne à chacun un bout de corde en lui demandant de tirer son bœuf. Les trois animaux passent la journée à tirer vainement sur la corde. Ils découvrent la supercherie et promettent de tuer le lièvre.

La gazelle vient pour boire. Le python lui fait part de leur décision. La gazelle en informe le lièvre.

Le lièvre se couvre de la peau d’un chat sauvage mort et en putréfaction et il va trouver l’un après l’autre ses créanciers. Ceux-ci lui demandent, en le prenant pour un chat sauvage, ce qui lui est ainsi arrivé. Le « chat sauvage » leur explique que c’est la malédiction de lièvre : lui, le « chat sauvage », a fait crédit d’un bœuf au lièvre ; quand il a réclamé sa dette au lièvre, celui-ci a refusé de le payer et il l’a maudit.

Chacun des créanciers renonce à sa dette.

Bojel yehi to caamaaba, ngel wii : « Caamaaba, nyamlam ngaari haa nyande altine, mi yoɓ-maa ngaari maa. » Caamaaba nyamli ngel ngaari.

Ngel waɗdi e maɓɓe lajal. Nde lajal ngal timmi, bojel yehi to nyiiwa. Ngel wii : « Nyiiwa, addu ɓoggol mi yoɓ-maa ngaari maa. » Nyiiwa hokki ngel ɓoggol. Lella ari yarde. Caamaaba wii : « Ɗum ko Bojel ne ? » Lella wii : « Alaa. Ko miin lella ari yarde. » Caamaaba wii : « So a yiyii Bojel, mbiyaa mo, miin e Nyiiwa e Mbaroodi, ɗo min njii mo fof, ko min warooɓe mo ! »

Lella yehi. Ba yii bojel, ba wii : « Bojel, Nyiiwa e Mbaroodi e Caamaaba mbii ɗo njii-maa fof, ko ɓe warooɓe ma ! Ɗuum noon, a wontaa yar ndiyam, ladde ndee, on kejjataa heen ! »

Bojel ari tawi koturu ina maayi ha ndu nyoli, handu ɓuny-ɓunyca gilɗi. Tan bojel suddii nguru oo, gilɗi ina caama. Bojel ari e sara maayo, tan caamaaba wii : « Hii jam, Koturu, holko waɗ-maa nii ? » Bojel wii : « Waɗi mi nii, ko kuɗdi Bojel. Mi nyamlii ngel ngaari, mbiimi yo ngel yoɓam, ngel salii yoɓde mi, ngel huɗi mi : kuɗdi maggel waɗi mi nii. » Caamaaba wii : « So a yiyii Bojel, miɗa rewannoo mo ngaari, mi yaafi-moo-mo. »

Tan bojel itti nguru werlii. Ngel yehi to caamaaba. Caamaaba wii : « Ɗum ko Bojel ne ? » Bojel wii : « Yaa Allaahu, yaa Allaahu !… » Caamaaba wii : « Alaa, mi yaafino-maa-ma ngaari am. Ɓam, wata huɗam ! »

Bojel yehi to nyiiwa. Nyiiwa wii : « Ɗum ko Bojel ne ? » Bojel wii : « Yaa Allaahu, yaa Allaahu !… » Nyiiwa wii : « Alaa, alaa ! Wata huɗam, mi yaafino-maa-ma ngaari am ! »

	Wonnoo ɗoo ko bojel.	Était ici un lièvre.
	Ngel yehi to nyiiwa, ngel wii :	Il alla chez l’éléphant, il dit :
	« Nyiiwa, nyamlam ngaari haa nyande altine mi yoɓ-maa. »	« Éléphant, donne-moi un bœuf à crédit jusqu’au jour de lundi, je te rembourse. »
	Nyiiwa nyamli ngel ngaari.	L’éléphant lui donna un bœuf à crédit.
5	Bojel yehi to mbaroodi, ngel wii :	Le lièvre alla chez le lion, il dit :
	« Mbaroodi, nyamlam ngaari haa nyande altine mi yoɓ-maa. »	« Lion, donne-moi un bœuf à crédit jusqu’au jour de lundi, je te rembourse. »
	Mbaroodi nyamli ngel ngaari.	Le lion lui donna un bœuf à crédit.
	Bojel yehi to caamaaba, ngel wii :	Le lièvre alla chez le python, il dit :
	« Caamaaba, nyamlam ngaari haa nyande altine, mi yoɓ-maa ngaari maa. »	« Python, donne-moi un bœuf à crédit jusqu’au jour de lundi, je te rembourse ton bœuf. »
10	Caamaaba nyamli ngel ngaari.	Le python lui donna un bœuf à crédit.
	Ngel waɗdi e maɓɓe lajal.	Il convint avec eux d’un délai [de paiement].
	Nde lajal ngal timmi, bojel yehi to nyiiwa.	Lorsque le délai fut atteint, le lièvre alla chez l’éléphant.
	Ngel wii :	Il dit :
	« Nyiiwa, addu ɓoggol mi yoɓ-maa ngaari maa. »	« Éléphant, donne-moi une corde pour que je te rembourse ton bœuf. »
15	Nyiiwa hokki ngel ɓoggol.	L’éléphant lui donna une corde.
	Bojel yehi to mbaroodi, ngel wii :	Le lièvre alla chez le lion, il dit :

	« Mbaroodi, ndaa ɓoggol fooɗ ngaari maa ! »	« Lion, tiens la corde, tire ton bœuf ! »
	Bojel yehi to caamaaba, ngel totti caamaaba ɓoggol, ngel wii :	Le lièvre alla chez le python, il donna [l’une des] cordes au python, il dit :
	« Fooɗ ngaari maa ! »	« Tire ton bœuf ! »
	Bojel wii gooto fof yoo fooɗ ngaari mum.	Le lièvre dit à chacun de tirer son bœuf.
30	Ɓe nyalli fooɗde ha ɓe tampi, hay huunde araani.	Ils passèrent la journée à tirer jusqu’à ce qu’ils soient épuisés, rien ne vint.
	Moni fof rewi e ɓoggol mum, ha ɓe njettii lekki.	Chacun suivit sa corde, jusqu’à arriver à l’arbre.
	Nyiiwa wii :	L’éléphant dit :
	« Waɗi en nii ko Bojel.	« C’est Lièvre qui nous a fait ça.
	Kono ɗo njii-moo-mi fof, ko mi baroowo mo ! »	Mais où que je le voie, je le tueraⁱ¹ ! »
35	Mbaroodi wii :	Le lion dit :
	« Ladde ndee mi jaggii ɗum :	« La brousse, je la tiens :
	ɗo njiimi Bojel fof, ko mi baroowo ɗum ! »	où que je voie Lièvre, je le tuerai ! »

	« Waɗi mi nii, ko kuɗdi Bojel.	« C’est la malédiction de Lièvre qui m’a fait ça.
